Challenges:
- Tunnel aligned with coastal, sandy and variable soil layers with high water table and a lot of water pressure.
- The intersection is a vital artery in Jeddah and full closure was not feasible.
- Numerous underground utilities (water, electricity, telecom) existed.
Mitigation:
- Extensive dewatering and ground stabilization solutions were performed to ensure safe and effective work progress
- Phased construction and temporary diversions along with heavy equipment distribution and good planning in order not to fully close the intersection.
- Coordination with multiple government entities and service providers along with safe working environment to prevent interfering with any underground utilities.

By December 2014, the 1,400 m bridge and tunnel connecting King Abdulaziz Road with Palestine Street and Al‑Hamra Street was officially opened for traffic, aimed at easing congestion along King’s Road and Palestine Street
